Pointers Earn Hard-Fought Split in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (12-6) split a pair of matches on Sunday in Milwaukee. UWSP was swept by defending champion Cal Lutheran before getting past host MSOE in five sets.
 
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) topped all players in kills in both matches. He tied for the match-high with 11 against CLU. He followed that up with a season-high 20 kills to lead all players versus MSOE.
 
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) was in double figures with 13 kills against MSOE.
 
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) both had double-digit assists in both matches. Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) and Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) both had double-figure digs in both matches.
 
UWSP 3, CLU 3 (22-25, 24-26, 14-25)
Olson had two kills and a block and a Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) ace gave the Pointers an 8-7 lead in the first. Bertrandt and Olson had two kills each to keep UWSP close after a 5-0 run by CLU. Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) and Dresen combined for three kills in a 5-0 UWSP run. Dresen and Olson combined for three more kills, but CLU took a 1-0 lead.
 
Dresen had three early kills and UWSP led, 11-9, in the second. Olson tied the set at 17-17 with a kill. Dresen had two more kills late, including one to thwart the first set point, but CLU got the final two points for a 2-0 lead.
 
Olson had a kill and two aces as the Pointers tried to rally from a 7-0 deficit. Bertrandt, Dresen and Jetzer each had a kill as CLU closed out the sweep.
 
UWSP 3, MSOE 2 (25-22, 20-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-10)
Bertrandt had four kills as the Pointers stayed close in the first set. Dresen had three kills and two solo blocks as UWSP took the first set with a 9-3 run at the end.
 
Dresen had a pair of early kills as UWSP was in front 10-7 in the second. Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Bertrandt combined on a block for a 13-10 edge, but MSOE closed the set with a 15 7 run to even the match.
 
Dresen opened the third set with a kill, the lone lead in the set for UWSP. Bertrandt had two kills in the set, but the Pointers couldn't catch up.
 
Dresen had two kills in a 6-1 run in the fourth set as the Pointers went in front, 14-11. Ben Feld (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had a block and a kill for a 22-17 lead. Dresen finished the set win with three-consecutive kills.
 
Dresen had four kills and an ace as UWSP scored six of the final seven points to win the match.
 
The Pointers will host Finger Lakes CC in an exhibition on Tuesday (Feb. 18) at 7:00 p.m.
