CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (7-4) extended its win streak to six matches with sweeps of Mount St. Joseph and Greenville to begin play on Saturday. In the day's finale, the Pointers fell in a marathon five-set match against host Wabash.
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) was in double figures in assists in all three matches with 60 on the day. He had a double-double against MSJU with a team-best 10 digs.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) was in double figures twice with a total of 48 assists on the day.
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) had double-digit kills in two matches with team highs of 19 against Wabash and 11 against MSJU.
Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Pointers with 15 kills in the win over Greenville.
UWSP 3, Mount St. Joseph 0 (25-21, 28-26, 27-25)
Dresen had three kills and block as a late 6-0 run gave the Pointers the opening set.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) had four kills and two blocks as UWSP prevailed with a 28-26 win to go up 2-0. The Pointers hit .273, the highest of the match, in the third set, including kills on sic of the final eight points to finish the sweep.
UWSP 3, Greenville 0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-17)
Olson and Dresen combined for 10 kills in the opening set to go up 1-0. Caleb Plamer had three blocks and served an ace as the Pointers cruised to the set two win.
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) and Olson combined for six kills in the third set as the Pointers finished off their sixth-consecutive sweep.
UWSP 2, Wabash 3 (26-28, 26-24, 26-24, 24-26, 10-15)
Owen Anderson had two kills and a block with Dresen and Olson combining for seven kills, but Wabash took the opening set. Jetzer, Olson and Dresen each had a kill as UWSP ended the second set with a 4-1 spurt. Smith and Jetzer each had a kill and combined on a block as the Pointers erased a Wabash set point to go up 2-1.
Jetzer had three kills and block during a 7-1 late, but Wabash prevailed to send the match to a decisive fifth set. Dresen had four of the Pointers' nine kills in the fifth set, but the win streak came to an end.
The Pointers will host Rockford on Tuesday (Feb. 4) in the home opener. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
