FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball (3-3) began the weekend at the Sabre Classic by sweeping both Calvin and Adrian.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) had a career-high 10 kills and tied a career-best with seven blocks in the win over Adrian.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) led all players with nine kills against Calvin.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) had 17 assists each to lead UWSP against Adrian and Calvin, respectively.
UWSP 3, Calvin 0 (25-17, 25-21, 27-25)
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) had a pair of kills as the Pointers jumped ahead, 6-3, in the first.
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) served an ace in a 4-0 burst as the lead grew to 13-8. Baeckman had a block, a kill and an ace in a 5-1 run for a 20-12 advantage en route to the first set win.
Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had a kill and an ace to start the second. Baeckman had three kills and a block in a 9-1 run as the Pointers regained the lead at 19-15.
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) had two early kills and
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) posted a kill and a solo block for an 8-7 edge int eh third. Five different Pointers had a kill in a 6-2 run as UWSP took a 17-15 lead. Calvin averted five match points until
Rikhil Patidar (Waukesha, Wis./South) and Baeckman had back-to-back kills to seal the win.
UWSP 3, Adrian 0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-20)
Smith had two kills and an ace as the Pointers opened the match with an 11-4 lead. Jetzer had two kills and two blocks as UWSP led, 19-6. The Pointers finished with a 6-0 run.
Jolin and Niznik each had an ace early in the second. Smith had a pair of kills and secured the set win combining on a block with Olson.
Smith posted three-straight blocks as the Pointers took a 4-2 lead in the third. He added three kills, but the Bulldogs stayed close at 13-12.
Owen Andersen (Racine, Wis./Case) had two kills in a 9-3 burst as UWSP seized control at 22-16. Smith and Dresen ended the match with consecutive kills.
The Pointers wrap up the weekend in Fond du Lac at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 25) against Westminster (Mo.).
