SAINT PETER, Minn. – Freshman
Ben Temple (Rockford, Ill./Lutheran) became the first member of the UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team to remain in the brackets on the third day of competition at the ITA/Midwest Regional this weekend.
Temple went 6-1 in the Midwest "C" singles bracket reaching the finals on Sunday. He won his first two matches of the weekend by 6-1, 6-0 scores over foes from Bethel and UW-Superior. He advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Loras in his third match. He continued to win in his bracket with a 6-3, 6-3 win against host Gustavus and a 6-2, 6-3 win versus Luther. On Sunday, he needed a super-breaker against Grinnell to reach the finals. He took the opening set, 6-4, but came up short in the second set, 6-3. In the super-breaker, he trailed 8-2 before winning eight-straight points to reach the final. He ended up falling 6-2, 6-4 to an opponent from St. Olaf.
Steven Benoy (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) won his opening match of the ITA singles with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Cornell. He picked up another win with doubles partner
Frederick Diehl (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angles), 8-5, in the consolation opening round.
Luca Hettstedt (Marbella, Spain/German School Marbella),
Dawson Froemming (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) and
Brady Wierzbicki (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) each earned two wins in the Midwest C singles. Hettstedt won 6-4, 6-1 against Loras and 6-1, 6-2 versus Wartburg. Froemming got a 6-3, 6-4 win versus St. Scholastica and a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Concordia (Wis.). Wierzbicki got past a foe from UW-La Crosse, 6-3, 7-6 (2) and won 6-2, 6-0 versus Concordia (Minn.).
Malcolm Rice (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) also earned an opening round win the C singles. He defeated a foe from Saint John's by a 6-0, 6-4 score. Rice and partner
Ayden Knuth (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) were winners in the ITA doubles opening round match against MSOE by an 8-4 score.
Froemming and partner
Anthony Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) got two wins in the Midwest B doubles bracket. They took the opening match, 8-6, against Concordia (Minn.). In round two, the duo was victorious by withdrawal.
Janes won his first match in the Midwest B singles by super-breaker. After dropping the first set, 7-5, he rolled through the second set, 6-0. In the super-breaker, he won 10-6 versus an opponent from MSOE.
Temple and Wierzbicki also earned a win in the Midwest B doubles bracket. The pair got past Macalester by an 8-6 score.
Connor Kryscio won his opening match in the consolation singles draw, 8-2, against Loras.
The Pointers return to action with a dual against UW-La Crosse in non-conference play at 10:00 a.m. on Oct. 12 in La Crosse.
