ELDRIDGE, Iowa—The UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team defeated St. Ambrose by a 4-3 final on Saturday afternoon.
UWSP's No. 2 doubles pair of
Malcolm Rice (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) and
Ayden Knuth (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) won 7-6 (9) but the Pointers lost the team point in doubles.
The Pointers won four of the six singles matches.
Dawson Froemming (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) took the No. 2 singles match with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
Frederick Diehl (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angles) needed a super-breaker to win No. 3 singles match, taking set one with a score of 6-0. He fell in the second set by a score of 7-5, to come through in the super-breaker winning 11-9.
Rice battled in the No. 4 singles match, taking the first set 6-4. After falling in the second set 6-2, he secured the super-breaker with a 10-4 final.
Anthony Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) put up a strong battle at the No. 5 singles match, taking the first set 6-3. A tie breaker was needed in set two for St. Ambrose to force a super-breaker, 7-6 (10). Janes prevailed in the super-breaker 10-6.
The Pointers remain in Iowa for the Cornell Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 15) at 10:00 a.m.
