Men’s Tennis Opens Season with Victory at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team defeated Dubuque by a 6-1 final on Sunday in the season opener.
 
UWSP's No. 2 doubles duo of Steven Benoy (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and Frederick Diehl (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angles) won 6-2, but the Pointers dropped the point for doubles.
 
The Pointers swept the singles matches to earn the team victory. Benoy cruised through his No. 1 singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Dawson Froemming (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) flipped the set scores, 6-0, 6-2, in his win at No. 3 singles, the first in his collegiate career.
 
Diehl needed a super-breaker at No. 2 singles. He won the first set, 6-0. After dropping the second set by a 6-3 score, he prevailed in the super-breaker, 10-5.
 
Malcom Rice also won his initial collegiate singles match, taking No. 4 by a 6-2, 6-4 score. Connor Kryscio won by opponent retirement at No. 5 singles. Hayden Schreier (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) made it a clean sweep at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
 
The Pointers are next in action with the home opener against Ripon on Sept. 12. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
