WAUKESHA, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (10-7) got double-doubles from
Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) in pulling off a reverse sweep against MSOE (7-7). The Pointers rallied for the 3-2 win (18-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-23, 15-12).
Niznik posted his second double-double of the year with a season-high 12 digs. He added 11 kills. Meyers had his fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 16 kills and 10 digs.
Andy Sanchez (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge) led all players with 21 digs.
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) led the Pointers with 32 assists.
Niznik and Meyers combined for five kills early, but the Pointers trailed 10-7.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had an ace and a kill as MSOE maintained the lead to take the opening set.
Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) had a solo block to give UWSP a 3-1 edge early in the second. Niznik served up an ace amid an 8-3 run as the Pointers took a 12-9 lead. Niznik had three kills down the stretch, but MSOE eked out the set to take a 2-0 lead.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) had a kill early and served an ace to put UWSP up 14-11 in the third. Brogren registered a kill to give the Pointers set point. MSOE rattled off five-straight to tie the set at 24-24. But the Pointers scored the final two points to extend the match.
Meyers had three kills, but UWSP faced an 18-13 deficit. Meyers had two more kills with Dietz adding a kill and a block as the Pointers rallied to tie the set at 22-22. Dietz and Baeckman had consecutive solo blocks to send the match to the fifth set.
Meyers opened the set with a kill and Smith added a block as UWSP jumped ahead, 4-0. Niznik and Meyers each had a kill. Dietz posted a block and a match-sealing kill to complete the comeback.
The Pointers travel to Viterbo on March 28 for the regular season finale. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m. in La Crosse.
