Pointers Sweep WLC in Tuesday Home Match

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (4-4) has its first win streak in program history after posting a 3-0 sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran (0-3) on Tuesday night at Berg Gym. The Pointers have won consecutive matches for the first time this season.
 
Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) led all players with 10 kills. Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) added a season-high eight kills. Andy Sanchez (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge) led all players with 17 digs. Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) had 22 assists.
 
Smith had a pair of kills sandwiched around a Brogren ace as the Pointers used a 5-0 to pull ahead, 12-8, in the first set. Smith served up an ace of his own to push the advantage to 16-10. Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) added a pair of kills and Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) closed out the 25-20 win with a kill.
 
Smith began the second with a block, a kill and an ace for a 5-2 lead. Smith added another block and a kill by Meyers gave UWSP a 13-7 lead. Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had a kill and a block as UWSP continued to lead, 19-14. Meyers had a trio of late kills, including the set-sealer as UWSP took a 25-21 win.
 
The third set saw Smith record two kills and two blocks as the Pointers were in front, 9-2. Detz added an ace as the lead ballooned to 16-4 following a 6-0 run. Smith had a kill and a block as UWSP ran away with the third set, 25-10.
 
The Pointers travel to Plymouth on Saturday (Feb. 10) for a 6:00 p.m. match versus Lakeland.
