DE PERE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (2-4) had an inauspicious start to the program's first road trip as the Pointers fell, 3-0, to host St. Norbert and 3-2 to Augustana at the St. Norbert Tournament.
Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) each had a double-double against AC. Meyers tied for the match-high with 15 kills and added 11 digs. Brogren had a match-high 35 assists to go with 13 digs.
UWSP 0, SNC 3 (0-25, 0-25, 26-28)
The Pointers were forced to forfeit the first two sets due to not having proper equipment.
In the third set,
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) served three-straight aces in a 6-1 run.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) added an ace as UWSP led, 108. UWSP got blocks from Baeckman, Brogren and Meyers in another 6-1 run for a 21-18 advantage. Baeckman had another kill late, but SNC prevailed, 28-26.
UWSP 2, Augustana 3 (25-21, 20-25, 28-26, 16-25, 10-15)
Smith had a pair of kills in the first set giving UWSP a 14-13 edge with his second.
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) and
Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) combined for five kills down the stretch as the Pointers took the opening set.
Meyers had four kills in the second set, but a 7-0 run turned a seesaw set in favor of the Vikings to tie the match.
Brogren served an ace to give UWSP an 11-9 advantage in the third set. Meyers had three kills as UWSP went ahead, 21-18. Niznik had two kills late as UWSP prevailed to take a 2-1 lead.
A 10-1 run in the middle of the fourth set put Augustana ahead. Niznik had three kills and an ace late, but the match went to the fifth set.
Baeckman had a pair of kills in the fifth, but UWSP trailed the entire set to come up short.
The Pointers will wrap up the weekend against The University of Olivet on Sunday (Feb. 4) at 10:00 a.m.
