Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. – All five starters were in double figures as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (7-5, 1-0) opened conference play with an 89-75 win at UW-Stout (5-7, 0-1).
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) poured in a career-best 23 point on 11-of-15 shooting from the field and he led the Pointers with seven rebounds.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) added 15,
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) and
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) had 13 points each with
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) rounding out the quintet with 12 points.
For the game, the Pointers hit 9-of-13 from three-point range. Miron and
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) both went 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
Krohn got UWSP on the board for a 2-0 lead. Abdul-Wahid nailed a triple to tie things at 6-6. Back-to-back buckets by Krohn and Abdul-Wahid put UWSP ahead 10-8. Genrich and Bolden each sunk a three and UWSP held a 27-24 edge midway through the first.
Butler, Miron and
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) all scored during a 10-0 run that gave UWSP a 34-24 lead. Genrich hit another three before Stout posted seven straight. Miron hit another from beyond the arc and the UWSP lead was 46-41 at the break.
Krohn had four early points, but Stout briefly edged in front. Buchanan drained a three and Krohn added five with Butler giving UWSP a 62-53 lead following a 12-2 burst.
Butler added nine more points as the UWSP lead reached double digits, 75-64, with four minutes remaining. Miron, Krohn and Bolden made field goals on consecutive possessions and the Pointers were up 15 with 1:53 left. Bolden and Butler combined to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the win.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 6). Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
