STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (1-1) suffered the program's first defeat, 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-23), to visiting Edgewood (1-0) on Friday night.
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) posted a team-high eight kills to lead the Pointers.
Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) added six kills.
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) had 21 assists for UWSP and
Gabe Uttech (Fall River, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led the team with seven digs.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had a kill to briefly halt a 13-3 start by the Eagles. Niznik had two kills late as UWSP dropped the opening set.
Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) had a pair of kills and Meyers had the Pointers' lone ace of the match as UWSP gained a 4-3 edge early in the second.
Caleb Palmer (Littleton, Col./Chatfield) had a huge solo block in a 4-0 run by the Pointers to tie, 13-13. Dietz and Niznik had consecutive kills for a 17-all tie, but EC finished the set with an 8-3 run.
Baeckman and Niznik had a pair of kills each as UWSP took an 8-6 lead. Meyers had a kill to keep UWSP ahead, 12-10. Meyers had two more kills late and a block by Baeckman and
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) helped UWSP avert a third match point. Edgewood closed it out with a kill for the sweep.
The Pointers continue the homestand on Tuesday (Jan. 23) with a 7:00 p.m. match against St. Norbert in Berg Gym.
