STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (2-1) got a match-high 16 kills from
Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and defeated visiting St. Norbert (3-3) in four set, 3-1 (25-13, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23).
Meyers led all players with 16 kills.
Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) and
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) added nine and six, respectively.
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) led UWSP with 34 assists.
Andy Sanchez (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge) had a team-best 14 digs.
Meyers and Smith had two kills each as UWSP opened the match on a 6-1 run.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had a pair of solo blocks in the set and Meyers had two more kills late in the set one win.
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) served up two aces in an 8-0 burst as UWSP jumped in front, 13-6, in the second. Meyers had five kills as UWSP held off the Green Knights and Baeckman sealed the set victory with an ace.
Meyers, Baeckman and Dietz each had a kill early as UWSP played from behind in the third set. A 6-2 run by the Pointers got UWSP within one at 18-7. A kill and a block by Dietz kept UWSP within one at 20-19, but SNC scored the final five points to take the set.
An ace by Dietz gave UWSP an 8-4 lead to start the fourth. Brogren and Meyers each had a kill as UWSP pulled even at 12-all and again at 14-14. Dietz had a pair of kills as UWSP fell behind, 18-17. Baeckman and Meyer had a kill each and Smith ended the match with a kill as UWSP closed on a 7-2 run.
The Pointers wrap up the season-opening homestand on Feb. 1 with a 7:00 p.m. match against Marian in Berg Gym.
