Men’s Volleyball Wins Five-Set Marathon in Inaugural Match

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (1-0) began its program with a marathon five-set win in the first ever match. The Pointers took down visiting Lakeland (0-2), by a 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 22-20) final.
 
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) and Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) notched the program's first double-doubles. Meyers had team highs of 14 kills and 13 digs. Brogren led UWSP with 40 assists and added 10 digs.
 
The Pointers won the first point of the match with Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) and Caleb Palmer (Littleton, Col./Chatfield) combining for a block. Palmer had the first kill and first ace in program history as UWSP went ahead, 5-3. Meyers added two kills and an ace for an 11-9 edge. Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had a pair of kills, but the Muskies closed the set with the final five points.
 
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) ended a 3-0 start to the second by Lakeland with a kill. Brogren and Meyers had an ace each and a kill by Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) put UWSP in front 13-11. Meyers had four kills down the stretch and the Pointers evened the match at 1-1.
 
Niznik had a kill and an ace sandwiching a 6-0 run as the Pointers took a 9-6 lead in the third. Smith had a kill and a block for a 16-11 lead. Niznik completed the set win with three kills in the final six points.
 
Baeckman and Niznik had two kills each as UWSP trailed 12-9 in the fourth. Brogren had a kill amid a 5-0 run by the Pointers to knot the set at 15-15. Meyers, Dietz and Smith each had a kill, but Lakeland scored the final four points to send the match to a decisive fifth.
 
Meyers and Dietz had two kills each as the Pointers jumped out to a 5-0 start in the fifth. The Muskies stormed back to take a 12-11 lead. Meyers had a kill to thwart the first match point. Baeckman brushed aside another match point with a kill. Then, tied at 20-20 in the fifth, Smith and Dietz posted back-to-back blocks to give UWSP the win.
 
The Pointers are right back in action on Friday (Jan. 19) at 6:00 p.m. in Berg Gym against Edgewood.
