RIPON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team had little trouble in winning matches against Milwaukee Area Technical College, 8-1, and host Ripon, 9-0.
Against MATC, No. 1 doubles pair
Steven Benoy (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and
Diego Mosquera Herrero (Madrid, Spain) and No. 2 doubles team
Dan Harris (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) and
Samuel Zapata Hernandez (Envigado, Col./Colegio Colombo Britanico) rolled to identical 8-0 wins.
In singles action,
Connor Paullin (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) won at No. 2 by a 6-3, 6-2 score. At No. 3,
Spencer Gross (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) won a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-6 (7-2), before winning the second set, 6-3.
Austin Kahl (Janesville, Wis./Craig) won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and
Erik Berg (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) swept the No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Things weren't quite as easy against Ripon. Benoy and Mosquera Herrero won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Hayden Schreier (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and Paullin took No. 2 doubles by an 8-6 final. Zapata Hernandez and Harris completed the doubled sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3.
Benoy won at No. 1 singles 6-4, 7-6 (8-0). Mosquera Herrero claimed No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Schreier needed a tiebreaker after splitting 6-3 sets. He prevailed, 13-11. Paullin took the No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-2 score.
At No. 5 singles, Zapata Hernandez won the first set, 7-6 (7-2). Then he took the second set, 6-3. Harris cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to complete the shutout.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota on Saturday (Mar. 4) for an 11:30 a.m. match against St. Olaf.
