MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Less than 24 hours after winning at Carroll, the UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team was back in action in Iowa on Saturday. UWSP dropped the first match, 6-3, to Simpson before defeating host Cornell by the same 6-3 score.
Steven Benoy (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and
Diego Mosquera Herrero (Madrid, Spain) went 2-0 on the day at No. 1 doubles. They beat Simpson by an 8-1 score and defeated Cornell, 8-6.
Benoy won both of his matches at No. 1 singles. He cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 score against the Storm. Then versus Cornell, he won 6-2, 6-1.
Mosquera Herrero also went 2-0 on the day at No. 2 singles. Against Simpson, he took the first set, 6-3. He dropped the second set, 6-0, but rallied for a 10-6 win in the tiebreaker. He had an easier time against Cornell with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Samuel Zapata Hernandez (Envigado, Col./Colegio Colombo Britanico) and
Dan Harris (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, against Cornell. Zapata Hernandez also won at No. 5 singles against Cornell, taking the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6), and earning the win with a hard-fought 7-5 score in set two.
Connor Paullin (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) also earned a win against Cornell. He was victorious at No. 4 singles by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 score.
UWSP is next in action on Feb. 26 with a pair of matches in Ripon against MATC and Ripon beginning at 12:00 p.m.
