Pointers Win Second Straight, Hand Carroll First Loss

NEW BERLIN, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team (3-7) officially has a win streak after picking up its second-straight victory and handing Carroll (5-1) its first loss of the season.

The Pointers got on the board first with the No. 1 doubles pair of Steven Benoy (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and Diego Mosquera Herrero (Madrid, Spain) taking an 8-4 decision.

At No. 3 doubles, Samuel Zapata Hernandez (Envigado, Col./Colegio Colombo Britanico) and Dan Harris (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) needed a tiebreaker to put UWSP back in front. They won 8-7 with a 7-1 tiebreaker score.

Benoy bounced back to win at No. 1 singles. He took the opening set, 7-5. But after dropping the second set, 6-1, he needed a big push in the tiebreaker to prevail, 11-9.

Mosquera Herrero put UWSP within a point of the win as he rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

Hayden Schreier (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) battled at No. 3 singles. He won the first set, 6-4. He came up short in the second set, 6-2. A third tiebreaker of the match was needed and Schreier came out on top, 10-8, to secure the win for UWSP.

The Pointers travel to Iowa on Saturday (Feb. 18). UWSP will take on Simpson at 12:30 p.m. before facing host Cornell at 4:00 p.m. to close out the weekend.
