JACKSON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's tennis team survived five tiebreakers to pick up a 5-4 victory at Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday.
UWSP's No. 1 doubles team of
Steven Benoy (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and
Diego Mosquera Herrero (Madrid, Spain) got an 8-7 victory after winning the tiebreaker, 7-3.
At No. 2 doubles,
Hayden Schreier (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and
Connor Paullin (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) was on the other side of an identical 8-7, 7-3 tiebreaker.
Samuel Zapata Hernandez (Envigado, Col./Colegio Colombo Britanico) and
Dan Harris (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to put UWSP ahead.
Benoy cruised through No. 1 singles to a 6-2, 6-3 final. Mosquera Herrero was back in the tiebreaker scenario coming out on top, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) putting UWSP within a point of the victory.
Schreier nearly secured the win at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-4, he rebounded to win set two, 6-4. In the decisive third set, yet another tiebreaker was needed. Schreier came up short, 7-6 (7-2).
It all came down to Harris at No. 6 singles and the fifth tiebreaker of the match. Harris won the opening set 6-3. But the second set came down to a tiebreaker with Harris prevailing, 7-6 (7-5).
The Pointers next head to Carroll for a 7:00 p.m. match on Friday (Feb. 17).
