STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Cass Klitzke (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area) scored two goals just over four minutes apart in the first half to help the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (3-5-2) to a 3-2 win over visiting Wheaton (1-5-2) in the four-game homestand finale.
Klitzke put the Pointers in front in the 23rd minute with her first collegiate goal. She got the ball in the box from
Gina Wasniewski (Ironton, Minn./Brainerd) and fired a laser into the far corner.
Just over four minutes later, Klitzke notched a quick brace after a
Kati Frierdich (Neenah, Wis./Winneconne) pass into the box was tipped away from a defender by
Shea-Lynn Gerred (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac).
The 2-0 lead was extended just 33 seconds into the second half.
Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) pushed the ball out wide to Frierdich who lifted a high shot towards net. The Wheaton goalkeeper corralled the ball, but it had crossed the line first for a 3-0 UWSP lead.
In the 80th minute, the Thunder pulled a goal back. Three minutes later, UWSP was called for a handball in the box and Wheaton converted the penalty kick to pull within 3-2.
UWSP goalkeeper
Miranda Nieman (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) made one more of her five saves in the match to secure the win.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Oct. 1) to open conference play. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
