UWSP Women’s Soccer Shut Out in Home Opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (0-1-0) suffered a 2-0 shutout defeat in the home opener to visiting St. Catherine (1-0-0) on Thursday afternoon.

UWSP goalkeeper Miranda Nieman (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) made five saves in the match to keep the Pointers close throughout.  The Wildcats took the lead in the 20th minute on a cross kicked in from close range. Three minutes later, it was a long-distance strike that put the visitors up 2-0.

Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop) got UWSP's first shot attempt in the opening minute, but the low shot from distance was comfortable for SCU's goalkeeper Kate Praetz.

In the second half, Gina Wasniewski (Ironton, Minn./Brainerd) notched a shot on goal in the 47th minute and Shea-Lynn Gerred (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) added UWSP's final shot on frame in the 86th minute.

The Pointers earned two first-half corner kicks, but nothing developed from either. The visitors earned four corner kicks. UWSP was out-shot 25-6 overall.

UWSP hits the road for the next five matches beginning with a trip to Minnesota on Sunday (Sept. 4) to face St. Olaf at 1:00 p.m.
