Aworowa, Ghana – While the rest of the team prepared for their upcoming indoor track and field season, senior
Kasy Walker-Daniels (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) arrived in Aworowa, Ghana for a two-week humanitarian trip. Walker-Daniels heard about the trip through former teammate
Mike Ayensu-Mensah (Appleton, Wis./North), whose father organizes the trip on the Ghana side.
The United Methodist Church in Stevens Point organizes a trip to Aworowa every two years with volunteers from the community.
The purposes of this specific trip were to deliver over 200 pounds of medical and school supplies to local clinics and five different elementary schools, to finish building an orphanage and clinic, and to visit the wells that the volunteers in the previous trip had built and make sure they were still functioning correctly.
This was Walker-Daniels first time ever leaving the country. "It was really eye-opening to see the whole culture," said Walker-Daniels. "Get to see firsthand what it's really like to be there and live in that community and not just the pretty attractions."
"My advice for anyone interested in a trip like this would be to try to get connected with people who have been on these trips before," said Walker-Daniels. "They are great resources, and they can explain to you a lot of the things you might not even think of."
