OSHKOSH, Wis. – It was the
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) show on Saturday for the UW-Stevens Point men's wrestling team at Saturday's WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's). As a team, the Pointers placed sixth.
Results
Berlin won the title at 133 for the third-straight year going 4-0 on the day. He also repeated as the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet following his dominating performance.
Berlin began the day with back-to-back second-period falls over foes from UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse. He then pinned UWO's Murphy to advance to the finals. There he won by a 12-3 major decision to claim his third straight conference championship.
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) took second at 157 ending his unbeaten run on the year in the finals. He won a 4-3 decision to begin the day. Then advanced to the finals with an 8-3 decision in the semifinals. In the finals, he battled to the third period before giving up four points in a 4-0 loss.
Luke Hill (Cashe, Okla./Cashe) placed fifth in the 141 bracket. He won three matches in the consolation bracket, including 3-2 and 6-4 decisions. He took fifth with a medical forfeit.
Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) finished sixth at 165. He won an 8-0 major decision to start the day. Then earned a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals.
Josh Heuss (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) earned a pair of wins, a 4-2 decision and a second-period fall, in the 165 bracket.
Alex Mischka (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) snagged a sixth-place finish at 197. He earned a tech fall win in the consolation bracket. Teammate
Blake Flach (Shell Lake, Wis./Shell Lake) won a match by fall in the 197 consolation bracket.
Ben Kasten (Reedsville, Wis./Brillion) won two matches in the 174 bracket. A 12-2 major decision in the opener and 2-1 decision in the consolation bracket.
UWSP will next be in action at the Upper Midwest Regional on Feb. 25 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
