Box Score 2 PEORIA, Ill. – UW-Stevens Point softball's second trip to Illinois didn't not turn out like the first. The Pointers (4-2) suffered a 2-1 loss to St. Scholastica (9-1) in the opener before an 8-1 setback to Dubuque (1-1) in the nightcap.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) and
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) each had a pair of hits in game two. Buerger drove in the UWSP's run in game two while Luedtke had an RBI in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 1, St. Scholastica 2
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) began the game with a double to center, but the promising start was squashed without UWSP pushing home a run.
CSS turned a one-out double in the fourth into a run after a wild pitch and passed ball. A UWSP miscue in the fifth allowed the Saints to push home a second unearned run.
In the sixth,
Kally VanLaanen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) led off with a single up the middle.
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) followed with a sac bunt and reached on an error to put runners on the corners. With two out, Luedtke pushed home a run to cut the deficit in half.
The Pointers were retired in order in the seventh as CSS held on for the win.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) struck out four in 4.0 innings.
Lauren Lindahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) fanned two in 3.0 innings.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, Dubuque 8
The Spartans put up five runs in the first inning on five hits, including two home runs. Another long ball to lead off the second gave UD a 7-0 lead after two.
Geiyer singled with one down in the third. Two batters later, Buerger ripped a double to center to plate UWSP's first run.
The Pointers had hits in the fourth, fifth and seventh, but were unable to get a sustained rally in those frames.
Tkach struck out five more in 3.0 innings of relief. Lindahl added two strikeouts in game two.
The Pointers travel to Lake Forest on Sunday (March 7) for a doubleheader against the Foresters beginning at 1:00 p.m.
