STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
Gracie Wendels (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Assumption) scored early and freshman
Miranda Nieman (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) closed the deal as the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (6-1-2) defeated visiting Dubuque (6-2-0) by a 1-0 final on Sunday.
Wendels put UWSP in front in the fifth minute as she rang a hard shot off the UD keeper, the post and then into the net. She got the ball on a nice give-and-go feed from
Maddy Hardyman (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) and
Bridget Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City), who each got an assist on the play.
The Pointers nearly doubled the advantage in the 18th minute.
Kati Frierdich (Neenah, Wis./Winneconne) made a bid for her third goal of the weekend, but her shot hit the cross bar and stayed out.
The Spartans got a corner kick in the 76th minute and nearly turned it into and equalizer. A mad scramble in the box resulted in a shot that trickled just wide of the net.
Nieman made eight saves for the Pointers, her fourth shutout of the season, as she remained unbeaten. UD goalkeeper Victoria Roethler made five shots.
UWSP will host Illinois Wesleyan and Loras in a pair of matches next Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 28-29) with kickoffs at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
