EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team placed third at the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) on Friday. Senior
Ben Vosters (Hatley, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) highlighted the Pointers' performance by winning the individual title at 133. Nine other UWSP wrestlers placed on the day. Vosters was also named the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete at the championship on Friday.
Results
Vosters ran the table in the 133 bracket beginning his day with a fall in the closing seconds of the second period over Blake Huffmon of UW-Whitewater. He advanced to the finals with a 5-3 decision win and took a 10-8 decision over Josh Stenger of UW-La Crosse for the title.
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) placed second at 141 for UWSP. He earned a 4-3 decision in the semifinals over Hayden Schlough of UWL to advance to the finals. Berlin was pinned early in the second period to end his run at the title.
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) took third at 157 for the Pointers. He began his day with a 16-0 tech fall. In the consolation bracket, he earned a fall at 0:53 over Ryan Hannah of UW-Eau Claire. In the consolation finals, he took third after a medical forfeit by teammate
Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County).
Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) also earned a third-place finish. He won by fall three times on the day in the 165 bracket. He pinned Mark Choinski of UW-Oshkosh at 1:36. In the consolation bracket he won by fall at 3:26 over Garrett Passmore of UW-Platteville. It took him just 1:14 to wrap up third place with a pin of Nick Fetzner of UWL.
Peckham placed fourth at 157 with a major decision, 13-2, in the championship bracket. In the consolation bracket, he earned a 3-1 decision win.
James Borgen (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) also earned a fourth-place finish in the 174 bracket. In the championship bracket, he began with an 11-2 major decision and won by 5-2 decision in the quarterfinals. After moving to the consolation bracket, he earned a 6-3 decision before finishing fourth.
At 184,
Austin Stebane (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) placed fourth. He had a fall at 3:55 in the championship bracket to start the day. In the consolation bracket, he picked up a 5-3 decision win.
Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) took fourth place in the 197 bracket. He earned a 4-2 sudden victory in his first match of the day. In the consolation bracket, he earned a 5-3 decision victory.
Graysen Sorenson at 174 and
Mason Wheeler (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) at 149 each placed sixth. Sorenson won three matches, all by decision, on the day. Wheeler won twice, a 5-4 decision and a fall at 4:26, in the consolation bracket.
The Pointers return to Eau Claire in two weeks (Feb. 22-23) for the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional.
