Vosters Headed to Nationals, Pointers Finish Fourth at Regional

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Senior Ben Vosters (Hatley, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) punched his ticket to the NCAA Tournament with a second-place finish at the Upper Midwest Regional on Saturday.  As a team, the UW-Stevens Point wrestling team placed fourth in the 17-team field.
 
Results
 
Vosters won a 10-5 decision to advance to the finals at 133.  In the finals, he fell to No. 2-ranked Sam Bennyhoff of Augsburg in a 9-0 major decision to place second.
 
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) finished fifth at 141.  He won his first match on Saturday, an 8-7 decision over Chaise Hauck from Chicago.  In the fifth-place match, he took a 3-1 decision over Chase Katzenmeyer of UW-Platteville.
 
Alex Heiden (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) also placed fifth.  He won by fall at 3:44 in his first match at 149 on Saturday.  In the fifth-place match, he pinned Bernard Casella of UW-Whitewater in 2:31.
 
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) took fifth in the 157 bracket.  He won an 8-7 decision over Ryan Hannah of UW-Eau Claire.  Then in the fifth-place match, he won by a 4-3 decision over Jerod Novak of St. John's.
 
In the 174 bracket, James Borgen (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) finished fifth.  He won a 6-2 decision to begin Saturday.  In the fifth-place match against Devan Vandenbush of MSOE, he won a 3-1 decision.
 
Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) recorded a fifth-place finish as well in the 197 bracket.  He pinned Dominic Gallo of Elmhurst at 4:13 in his first match on Saturday.  He won a 5-2 decision over Cullen Bauer-Trottier of Wisconsin Lutheran to take fifth.
 
Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) placed seventh in the 165 bracket.  He won by fall at 5:59 over Jonavan Huggins of Wheaton in the seventh-place match.
 
Vosters will represent the Pointers at the NCAA Championships beginning on March 8 in Roanoke, Va.
