Berlin, Weinzetl Win to Lead Strong Showing at Dan Gable Open

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team got bracket wins from Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) to lead the Pointers at the Dan Gable Open on Saturday.  The Pointers led all teams in falls in the tournament.

Berlin won the 133 bracket for the second-straight weekend.  He was dominant going 3-0 with a tech fall, fall and major decision in the finals.
 
Weinzetl went 4-0 on the day to claim the title at 165.  He began the day with falls in 44 seconds and 1:30.  A 3-1 decision sent him to the finals, where he won an 8-2 decision.  Ben Kasten (Reedsville, Wis./Brillion) had three wins, including a fall, in the bracket to place fourth.  Tucker Almond (Bossier City, La./Airline) also picked up two wins at 165.
 
In the 197 bracket, Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) came in second.  He started with two pins in 4:12 and 2:10 and won a 2-1 decision over UWO's Colton Cashmore to reach the finals.
 
Noah Wieczorek (Clear Lake, Wis./Clear Lake) took third in the 285 bracket.  He had wins by fall, decision and major decision.  Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) had three wins in the consolation bracket to finish sixth.  Kody Priesgen (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) had two pins and a decision win in the bracket as well.
 
In the 157 bracket, Nick Pretto (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington), Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) and uke Smiley took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.  Pretto had two falls and a major decision.  Peckham won by fall and decision.  Smiley also had a fall win and a tech fall.
 
Kyle Smith (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) placed fourth in the 149 bracket.  He pinned two foes in the consolation bracket.  Mason Wheeler (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) also got a victory by major decision in the bracket.
 
Austin Schrei (Poy Sippi, Wis./Berlin) finished fourth in the 174 bracket.  He had a pin at 1:55 in the consolation bracket.
 
Austin Stebane (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) picked up four victories in the 184 bracket to place fourth.  He won by fall in his first match and had two major decisions and a tech fall on the day.
 
Freshman Colin Barker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) took fifth in the 141 bracket.  He recorded a major decision and two decision wins on the day. Josh Partin (Bossier City, La./Airline) finished sixth and had two falls.  Zane Strubler (St. Paris, Ohio/Miami East) won by fall and Anthony Kanable (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) won two decisions in the bracket.
 
The Pointers return home on Wednesday (Nov. 13) for a dual versus Lakeland.  It is a combined dual with the UWSP women beginning action at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men.  Fans with a UWSP men's basketball ticket that night can get into wrestling for free.
