STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's wrestling team opened its season at the annual Pointer Open on Saturday at Quandt Fieldhouse. UWSP totaled 15 pins, second-most among the five teams
Results
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) won the 133 bracket by going 4-0 on the day. He won his first match by tech fall and pinned Matt McEnroe from UW-Oshkosh in the second round. Berlin won an 8-1 decision to move to the final. Their he took care of Kyle Burwick of the University of Wisconsin in a 4-3 decision. Burwick was a four-time state champion in North Dakota and the No. 4 recruit in the nation.
In the 141 bracket,
Zane Strubler (St. Paris, Ohio/Miami East) had two wins by fall and placed fourth. He went 3-2 also earning a9-3 decision win.
Anthony Kanable (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) also had a pair of falls on the day.
Colin Barker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) took fifth with two major decision wins and a 6-3 decision over Kanable in the fifth-place match.
Josh Partin (Bossier City, La./Airline) earned two falls as well.
Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) took third at 157 with a 4-1 day, including two decisions, a tech fall and a major decision.
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) had three wins on the day with a fall to place fourth.
Nick Pretto (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) won by fall in his first match in the bracket.
Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) took second in the 165 bracket with two major decision wins.
Ben Kasten (Reedsville, Wis./Brillion) placed third with two falls among his four wins. Blaz Dual earned a pair of wins in the consolation bracket.
In the 174 bracket,
Austin Schrei (Poy Sippi, Wis./Berlin) had falls in 1:09 and 3:24 in his first two collegiate matches. He placed sixth in the bracket.
Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) took fourth in the 197 bracket with two wins, including a fall.
In the heavyweight bracket,
Kody Priesgen (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) had a pair of wins, including a fall.
Noah Wieczorek (Clear Lake, Wis./Clear Lake) and
Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) each had a decision victory in the bracket.
The Pointers travel to Oshkosh on Saturday (Nov. 9) for the Dan Gable Open with action beginning at 9:00 a.m.
