WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team went 3-0 on the opening day of the Budd Whitehill Duals in Pennsylvania. The Pointers took down SUNY Cortland, 28-15, and Wesleyan, 27-14, before scratching out a 25-24 victory over Messiah to close out the day.
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) won all three matches on the day winning by fall at the 5:59 mark against Wesleyan. He won by tech fall, 23-7, versus Messiah and earned a 4-2 decision at 141 against SUNY Cortland.
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) picked up three wins on the day. He pinned his foe in 1:02 against Wesleyan and won a major decision, 11-3, against Messiah. He opened the day with a 6-5 decision versus SUNY Cortland.
Ben Vosters (Hatley, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) went 3-0 at 133, winning a 9-3 decision and an 11-5 decision in his first two matches. Against Messiah, he won by major decision, 16-6. His win against Wesleyan marked the 100th of his UWSP career.
Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and
James Borgen (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) each won twice on the day. Weinzetl won by fall (4:05) at 165 against Messiah and earned a 5-2 decision versus Wesleyan. Borgen opened the day with a fall at 3:43 against SUNY Cortland and won a 6-0 decision at 184 versus Wesleyan.
Steve Anderson and
Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) each had a win by fall on the day. Anderson pinned his foe at 285 in the second period (4:17) versus Wesleyan. Lipke pinned his opponent at 3:00 against Messiah at 197.
The Pointers will face York College of Pennsylvania in the championship bracket. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. CT.
