WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team took third place at the WIAC Wrestling Championship (presented by Culver's) on Friday in Whitewater.
Results
Ben Vosters (Hatley, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) and
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) reached the title match in their respective weight class, but both came in second.
David Granatelli (Appleton, Wis./North),
Dylan Diebitz (West Allis, Wis./West Allis) and
Dan Squires (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) each took home third after winning out in the wrestle back.
At 125, Vosters followed up a decision win with a first period fall over his UWO opponent in the semifinals. In the finals against Mike Tortorice of UW-Whitewater, he took the match to overtime before suffering a 7-5 decision loss to place second
Smiley won a pair of decisions by 8-2 and 3-2 scores to reach the finals. He took second after a 1-5 loss in the title match.
Granatelli had a trio of falls on his way to a third-place finish at 157. He opened the day with a 2:51 fall over a UW-Platteville foe. Then in his first wrestle back match, he pinned a Warhawk at 2:57. In the consolation semifinals, he advanced with a 5-3 sudden victory over fellow Pointer
Boone Roycraft (Omro, Wis./Winneconne). He finished the day with a fall at 4:15 against UW-Platteville in the third-place match.
Squires also recorded three falls on the day. He won with first-period pins in each of his first two matches. He came up short in a 2-1 decision, but he came back with a fall at 5:30 to move to the third-place match. In the final match, he won with a 14-5 major decision to capture third place.
Diebitz began the day with back-to-back falls at 197. After a 3-7 decision sent him to the consolation bracket, he rebounded with a 6-4 sudden victory to move to the third-place match. He was awarded third place after a medical forfeit.
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) took fourth at 133. He won a pair of major decisions on the day.
Cody Nielsen (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) at 174,
Ben Stassin (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) at 197 and
Ross Agg (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) at 285 each had a fall on the day.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota for a non-conference dual on Friday (Feb. 16) at Augsburg in a final tune-up for the Upper Midwest Regional the following weekend.
