Pointers Wrestling Racks up 28 Falls in Strong Showing at Gable Open

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team racked up 28 falls and had five wrestlers reach the finals, including wins by Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North), at the Dan Gable Open on Saturday.
 
Results
 
Berlin won the 133 bracket, the second-straight week a UWSP wrestler won the weight class.  He won by fall twice and a major decision sent him to the finals.  In the finals, he won by a 7-4 decision.
 
Smiley took the title in the 157 weight bracket.  He picked up a fall in 56 seconds and won a 15-0 tech fall to advance to the finals.  In the title match, he took care of the No. 3 JUCO wrestler, Tristen Guaman, from Harper College in an 8-3 decision.
 
Teammates Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) and Alex Heiden (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) finished third and fourth, respectively, at 157.  Peckham registered two falls and won the third-place match by a 16-8 major decision.  Heiden won two decisions and had a fall on the day.
 
The Pointers had three wrestlers place in the 141 bracket led by Wyatt Thiel's (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) second-place finish.  He recorded three falls on the way to the title match.  Zane Strubler (St. Paris, Ohio/Miami East) also recorded three falls in the bracket and earned a sudden victory to take third.  Michael Roycraft (Omro, Wis./Winneconne) took sixth in the weight class.
 
Steven Anderson (Appleton, Wis./East) finished second at 285 with a fall and two decision wins to reach the finals.  Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) had three falls and won the fifth-place match with a 5-2 decision.
 
Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) took second in the 165 bracket with two falls and a decision to reach the finals.  He fell to No. 1 ranked Michial Foy of Harper College in a 9-3 decision.  Teammates Steve Collins (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and Ben Kasten (Reedsville, Wis./Brillion) finished fifth and sixth in the bracket, both picking up a pair of victories on the day.
 
Three Pointers placed in the 197 bracket.  Ross Agg (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had two falls and two tech falls to take third.  Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) had a fall and placed fourth.  Alex Mischka (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) finished sixth and recorded a fall.
 
Taran Holland (Princeton, Wis./Princeton) won a pair of close matches to place fourth at 174.  He earned a 10-7 decision win and a 7-5 sudden victory.  Graysen Sorenson took sixth with a fall and tech fall on the day.
 
Isaiah Baker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) picked up three victories in the 149 bracket to place sixth.  He won by fall, earned a major decision and advanced to the fifth-place match on a 12-11 decision.
 
Austin Stebane (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) took sixth in the 184 bracket.  He won by fall at 5:33 in his first match of the day and had a 4-1 decision win.  Blake Johnson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) also had a fall in his opening match at 184.
 
The Pointers begin conference action with a dual at UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Nov. 14) at 7:00 p.m.
