Pointers Take Down No. 21 Concordia at Candlewood Suites Duals

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team faced a trio of ranked opponents at Saturday's Candlewood Suites Duals in La Crosse.  The Pointers opened the day with a 31-12 win over No. 21 Concordia (Minn.) before dropping duals to No. 1 Wartburg by a 39-16 score and to No. 8 Loras, 26-15.
 
Results
 
Senior Dylan Diebitz (West Allis, WI/West Allis) led the Pointers with two falls on the day.  UWSP had a total of six falls against some of the top wrestling teams in the country.  Fellow senior Boone Roycraft (Omro, WI/Winneconne) went 3-0 on the day for UWSP.
 
UWSP 31, No. 21 Concordia (Minn.) 12
Ben Vosters (Hatley, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood) opened the day with a shutout at 125. He defeated his opponent by a 5-0 score. 
 
Roycraft began a UWSP run with a 3-2 decision win at 157.  Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, WI/Kimberly) followed with a fall in the second period to tie the dual at 12-12.
 
Dan Squires (Muskego, WI/Wisconsin Lutheran) earned a 7-3 decision to put the Pointers ahead.  Cody Nielsen (Oconto Falls, WI/Oconto Falls) kept the momentum going with a fall just 10 seconds into his match.
 
Diebitz followed with a third-period fall and Ross Agg (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) sealed the win with a 14-2 major decision.
 
UWSP 16, No. 1 Wartburg 39
Roycraft got the Pointers on the board against the top-ranked Knights with a 10-1 major decision at 157.
 
Squires won by fall in the first minute of his match at 174 and Diebitz also picked up a first period fall.
 
UWSP 15, No. 8 Loras 26
Vosters began the final dual of the day with a fall at 2:30, his second win by fall of the season.
 
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek ) earned a 5-4 sudden victory decision to extend UWSP's lead to 9-0.
 
At 157, Roycraft picked up his third win of the day with a 6-0 decision.  Two matches later, Squires earned a 3-1 decision but Loras won the final three matches to earn the dual win.
 
The Pointers return to conference action with a dual at UW-Platteville on Thursday (Dec. 7) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
