Pointers Wrestling Opens Season with Four Individual Titles

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Seniors Dylan Diebitz (West Allis, WI/West Allis) and Boone Roycraft (Omro, WI/Winneconne) lead a quartet of UW-Stevens Point wrestlers that won their respective weight classes at Saturday's Pointer Open.  Junior Ben Vosters (Hatley, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood) and Dan Squires (Muskego, WI/Wisconsin Lutheran) also won their weight classes.

Diebitz picked up a fall and two major decisions on his way to a 4-0 day and the title in the 197 weight class.  His fall came at the 4:39 mark against UW-Oshkosh's John DePersia.
 
Roycraft won the 157 class with two falls.  He also had a pair of decisions, including a 4-2 win over fellow Pointer David Granatelli (Appleton, Wis./North) in the finals.
 
Vosters returned to the mat after missing most of last year with an injury.  He won the 125 weight class with a fall in the opening match.  He followed that with a tech fall and two major decisions.
 
Squires also cruised through his bracket in the 174 class.  He had a fall in his opening match and again in the finals, taking down UWO's AJ Stengel in 1:55 for the title. 
 
Freshman Nick Pretto (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) was runner-up in the 149 weight class.  He won by fall in the semifinals over Lakeland's Ian Giocchini. 
 
Sophomore Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, WI/Kimberly) also finished in second in his weight class.  He opened the day with a fall over UW-Oshkosh's Christian Quiles at 165.  He reached the finals on a 4-3 decision before withdrawing with an injury in the finals.
 
Senior Cody Nielsen (Oconto Falls, WI/Oconto Falls) led all wrestlers with three falls on the day.  His third fall of the day landed him third place in the 184 weight class when he pinned Concordia's Merrick O'Donnell in just 38 seconds.
 
Junior Steve Collins (South Elgin, IL/St. Charles North) earned a third-place finish in the wrestle back after a first-round setback.  He picked up a pair of falls and two wins by decision.
 
The Pointers travel to Oshkosh next Saturday for the Dan Gable Open.  The meet is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
