Pointers fall to Titans 5-4, 10-3

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team held a 4-1 lead in game one but could not hold on as the Titans of UW-Oshkosh came back to defeat the Pointers 5-4 in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Titans also took the nightcap 10-3.

The Pointers loaded the bases in the opening inning but plated just one run, taking the early lead. After the Titans tied the game in the second, the Pointers again loaded the bases in the third inning and scored three runs on an error by the Titans, taking a 4-1 lead.

The Titans battled back to take the lead in the sixth, pushing in front 5-4 on a two-run triple by Kassie Krueger, giving the Titans their first conference victory.

The Pointers stranded 11 runners in the opener, as Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) suffered her seventh loss of the season, allowing five runs, three earned and just eight hits in six innings of work. Alicia Hahnemann (Appleton, WI/West), Katie Krueger (Plover, WI/SPASH) and Katie Schulfer each tallied two hits.

In game two, the host Titans took an early 2-0 advantage, capitalizing on a UWSP error. The Pointers took one run back in the second as Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) drove in Kelly Arndt (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon).
Another Titan run in the second gave the host Titans a 3-1 edge after two.

UWSP came back to tie the score at 3-3 in the third thanks to a double by Krueger and an RBI single by Arndt.

In the home half of the third the Titans took control for good, plating three runs on a Emily Miskoski three-run home run. From there the Titans added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to sweep the doubleheader by a score of 10-3.

Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) suffered the loss, surrendering six hits and six runs, all unearned. Bekah Rennicke (Mequon, WI/Homestead) threw the final three innings in relief.
Arndt finished with a pair of hits in three at-bats.

UW-Stevens Point (11-19, 1-9 WIAC) will next be in action on Thursday, April 19 at McCarty Memorial Field in Stevens Point as it hosts UW-La Crosse. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
