Pointers split in Florida openers

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in its first action of the spring break trip, defeating Washington & Jefferson 7-3 in the opener before falling 4-1 to Elmhurst.

Alicia Hahnemann (Appleton, WI/West) went 3-for-4 in game one with an RBI and Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) finished the game 3-for-5 and also added an RBI. Bekah Rennicke (Mequon, WI/Homestead) chipped in with a 2-for-5 effort as did Brittany Sass (Appleton, WI/East).

Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) earned the complete game victory in her first action of the season, scattering six hits and striking out five.

In game two, Elmhurst handed the Pointers their first loss, as starter Stephanie Iori held the Pointers to just one run, forcing 12 pop-up outs.

Paige Meulemans (Appleton, WI/Kimberly) crossed the plate for the Pointers' only run of the day on a Rennicke hit.

Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) suffered the loss, her first of the season, allowing seven hits.

UW-Stevens Point (5-1) returns to action on Monday with a pair of games against Alleghney and Western New England. First game is set for a 11 a.m. Eastern start. Live stats will be available at http://athletics.uwsp.edu
