Pointers down second-ranked Warhawks, 71-60

Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. - Junior Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) led four Pointers in double figures as the 16th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball  knocked off second-ranked UW-Whitewater, 71-60, at Kachel Gym on Wednesday evening.

After the Warhawks scored on their opening possession, junior guard Jordan Giordana (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) knocked down consecutive three-pointers giving the Pointers a 6-2 advantage.

UWW then went on a 10-0 run, capped off by a three by Eric Bryson, to put the Warhawks up 12-6.

With 7:38 remaining in the half, sophomore Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) jump-started a 16-5 run with a three, giving UWSP a 35-24 advantage. UWW hit two free-throws near the end of the half and the Pointers took a 35-26 lead into the half.

The Warhawks opened the second half on a 21-5 run to claim the lead at 45-40 with the last six points coming from the foul line.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) and Joe Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln) began a 14-3 run for UWSP, bringing the score to 57-48 with 5:42 remaining in the game.

UWW could only come within five points on two occasions, the last one with just under a minute to go, but UWSP connected on 8-of-8 free throws to close out the game, completing the 71-60 upset.

T. Tillema scored a game-high 16 points and tallied five assists while Hass and D. Tillema chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively. Senior center Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Alex Merg led UWW with 12 point while Alex Edmunds helped with 11 and Luke Knoble and WIAC leading scorer Chris Davis each tallied 10.

For the game, the Pointers shot 50 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from three and 85 percent from the line compared to the Warhawks 38.3 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from three and 78.3 percent from the line. UWSP also won the turnover battle, 13-9, while holding a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

With the victory, UWSP moves into a first-place tie with UWW and the Pointers currently hold the tie breaker, coming out on top of both games against the Warhawks this season.

UW-Stevens Point (15-4, 8-2 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to UW-Superior to face the Yellowjackets in conference play. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
