OSHKOSH – Forced to change venue because of poor field conditions, the UW-Stevens Point softball team suffered a pair of defeats on Wednesday afternoon at the hands of the Titans of UW-Oshkosh 4-3 and 9-6.
UW-Stevens Point took a 2-0 lead in game one off a Katie Krueger (Plover, WI/SPASH) two-run home run in the third inning. UW-Oshkosh re-took the lead, 3-2, in the fifth with five straight one-out singles. Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) tied the score at 3-3 with a run scoring single in the fifth inning.
UW-Oshkosh broke the tie in the seventh on a two-out single to take game one 4-3.
Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) suffered the loss in game one, allowing four runs, all earned, in seven innings of work. She struck out three batters and scattered nine hits.
In game two the Titans took a 4-1 lead in the third inning on three consecutive run-scoring doubles. The Pointers pushed back in front 6-4 thanks to two-run home runs by Megan Tracy (Batavia, IL/Batavia) and Sarah Butts (Greenfield/Greenfield) in the fifth.
Oshkosh answered with four two-out runs in the seventh and plated five runs total to secure the series sweep.
Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) suffered the loss in game two, allowing eight runs, all earned.
UW-Stevens Point (19-15, 4-10 WIAC) returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 28 in DePere against St. Norbert College. The Pointers then close out the regular season on Saturday, April 30 with a doubleheader against UW-Eau Claire.
