PLATTEVILLE – The UW-Stevens Point softball team split their Monday match-up with the Pioneers of UW-Platteville, dropping game one of the series on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh but rebounded with a 9-0 victory in the nightcap to salvage the split.
Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) suffered the loss in game one, as she scattered eight hits over 6.1 innings of work, striking out six batters.
Offensively, Kelly Arndt (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon), Katie Shulfer (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) and Katie Krueger (Plover, WI/SPASH) each recorded a pair of hits and Arndt added two RBIs.
In game two, the Pointers posted three runs in the game's opening inning to take the early lead and rode a stellar pitching performance of Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) to secure the victory. The Pointers pounded out 12 hits in support of Babbitts' six-hitter.
Kimberly Liegel (Madison/LaFollette) finished the day with three hits and two RBIs while Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) and Arndt each added a pair of hits in the victory.
UW-Stevens Point (19-13, 4-8 WIAC) returns to action Tuesday afternoon with a home match-up against the Titans of UW-Oshkosh at McCarty Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
