LA CROSSE – The UW-Stevens Point softball team rebounded from a one-hit performance in game one to split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse, winning game two 6-1. The Eagles took game one 2-0.
The only scoring of game one came from the host Eagles in the game's opening inning when UW-La Crosse was able to record three of their six hits of Pointers' starter Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette).
The Pointers lone hit of game one came off the bat of Megan Tracy (Batavia, IL/Batavia), who broke up the perfect game bid by Lacey Probst. Probst faced one batter more than the minimum while striking out two batters on her way to a one hit shutout.
Jones took the loss, her fourth of the season, allowing two runs on just six hits, walking one and striking out one.
In game two it was the Pointers who had the bats working, and it was Tracy who provided the opening spark. Her two-out RBI double in the third broke a 0-0 tie and drove home Nicole Henke (Stevens Point/SPASH). Jena Ansorge (Whitelaw/Manitowoc Lincoln) drove in another run in the fourth and Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) had a solo home run in the sixth to give the Pointers a 3-1 lead.
In the seventh, the Pointers tacked on three more runs to push their lead to 6-1 and give Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) her seventh win of the season. Babbitts scattered four hits and struck out two.
Nelson finished the day with three hits including her home run and a double. Henke, Tracy and Ansorge each collected a pair of hits on the day.
UW-Stevens Point (18-10, 3-5 WIAC) returns to action on Tuesday, April 19 when they host Cardinal Stritch in non-conference action at McCarty Memorial Field starting at 3 p.m.
