Nelson Powers Pointers to Two Wins in Florida Opener

CLAREMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team pushed its record to 5-1 on Sunday afternoon, recording a pair of wins in the team's first day of action on their annual Florida trip. The Pointers posted a 6-4 victory over Trinity (Conn.) in the day's opener and then won a nine inning marathon with Elmhurst, 4-3.

Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) provided the heroics in game one, delivering the game-winning two RBI double to break a 4-4 tie. Sarah Butts (Greenfield/Greenfield) finished game one 3-for-4 and Megan Tracey was 2-for-4. Cassie Krum (Stratford/Stratford) picked up the win in relief of starter Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon)

Nelson again provided the pop at the plate again in the nightcap, driving in the game-winning RBI in the ninth. She finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) earned the victory, going all nine innings.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Monday with another pair of games against east coast opponents, as they square off against Plymouth State (N.H.) and Tufts (Mass.). Game times are set for 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. eastern, respectively.
