RIPON –UW-Stevens Point softball team waited five days to close out their season after their April 30th game was suspended due to weat
her, but finished strong as they completed a doubleheader sweep of Ripon College Tuesday afternoon at Tracy Field. The Pointers took game one 3-2 and followed up with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Ripon College was able to jump out to a quick lead scoring one run in the top of the first. Alli Jenson was able to plate Stephanie Rieuwpassa on a groundout after she doubled to right-center field to lead off the inning.
Sarah Butts (Greenfield) put the Pointers first run on the board in the bottom half of the third inning as she laced a two out single into left field, scoring
Megan Stebane (Kaukauna).
Jessica Berger (Bonduel) was then able to add another run one batter later as she plated Butts on a double down the left field line.
In the bottom of the sixth, Berger led off the inning with her second double of the game and scored on another two out double by
Megan Tracey (Batavia, IL), giving the Pointers a 3-1 advantage into the final frame.
Ripon's Kylie Ainslie led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and was moved up on a sacrifice bunt to second. The Red Hawks were able to put a second runner on after an error from the Pointers, putting runners on second and third with just one out. Rieuwpassa knocked in Ainslie one batter later on a single to center, closing the gap to just one run.
Michelle Jones (Madison) was then able to strike out the next batter and with two outs forced a fly out, giving the Pointers a 3-2 victory.
Jones (10-8) picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on just four Red Hawk hits. Brittnee Peotter (9-12) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Berger and Tracey led the Pointers with two hits apiece and each added an RBI.
Rieuwpassa collected three out of the four hits in game one for the Red Hawks.
In the nightcap, the Red Hawks once again jumped out to a first inning lead after Rieuwpassa led off the bottom half of the inning with her second home run of the season.
UW-Stevens Point was able to tie the contest up in the top of the third as
Nicole Henke (Stevens Point) led off the inning with an infield single and later came around to score on a RBI single by
Mallory Martens (Green Bay).
The Red Hawks were able to add a single run in the third to reclaim the lead on a double to center field by Jensen, plating Rieuwpassa.
Point waited until the fifth to move in front as
Katie Shulfer (Stevens Point) came through with a pinch hit two out single to center field, scoring
Alyssa Trautman (Middleton) and
Katie Krueger (Plover), putting Point up 3-2.
Ripon was able to push across a single run in their half of the inning when Ashley Krist singled home Briana Draeger, tying the game at three apiece.
The Pointers were able to take advantage of an error to begin the sixth as
Bryanna Tremillo (Menasha) reached base and was later driven in on a sacrifice fly by Krueger. Point added once more run in the inning on a RBI single to right by
Brittany Peper (Reedsburg), taking a 5-3 lead.
Chelsea Hensler (Waterloo) shut the Red Hawks down in the final two innings, only allowing two base runners out of eight who stepped up to the plate.
Hensler picked up her eighth victory of the season as she allowed one earned run in four innings of work. Rieuwpassa took the loss for Ripon as she allowed five runs, one earned, in seven innings.
Henke led the Pointers with three hits and
Jena Ansorge (Whitelaw) and Tremillo added two of their own. Shulfer led Point in the RBI department with two.
Rieuwpassa picked up three more hits in the second game, finishing six-for-seven on the day. Jackie Reichhart was the only other Red Hawk with a multiple hit game with two, including a double.
UW-Stevens Point completed their season with a 22-18 record, the seventh consecutive season in which they finished with a .500 or better record.
