Hensler Pitches Pointers to First Conference Road Win

Game 1 Box  |  Game 2 Box

SUPERIOR – Chelsea Hensler retired 23 of the 26 batters she faced in game two and allowed just two hits as the Pointers earned their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) road victory on Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 win over UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets handed UW-Stevens Point an 8-5 loss in game one.

A three-run opening inning for Superior put the Pointers in an early hole and two runs in the second and three more in the fifth would be all the offense the host Yellowjackets would need in the 8-5 victory.

Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) finished game one 3-for-4 with an RBI while Jessica Berger (Bonduel/Bonduel) and Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh/West) each tallied two hits. Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs, seven earned while striking out two. Cassie Krum (Stratford/Stratford) threw two innings in relief and did not surrender a hit.

In game two, the Pointers plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. In the bottom half of the inning, after a lead-off error, Stevens Point starter Hensler and the Pointers did not allow a base runner past second base.

Hensler retired 14 of the 15 batters she faced from the end of the first inning until the sixth. The only batter she did not retire walked, and was out on the next at-bat as part of a double play.

On offense, the Pointers continued to add to their lead, adding a run in the second and three more in the fifth when Kristen Selbach, Kimberly Liegel (Madison/LaFollette) and Berger each drove in runs.

Superior scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth before the Pointers closed the door on their first conference victory of the season.

Hensler struck out just two batters and walked three, earning the complete game victory.

Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with a nonconference doubleheader against Edgewood College in Madison. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Pointers then return to McCarty Memorial Field for a conference match-up against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse.
