Warhawks Hand Pointers First Conference Losses with Sweep

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

WHITEWATER – The Pointers held a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the third inning before the 15th-ranked Warhakws of UW-Whitewater plated six runs on their way to a 9-3 victory in game one on their way to a two game sweep of UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday afternoon. The pair of losses is the Pointers' first of the season in conference play.

The Pointers struck first in game one, as a leadoff double by Jessica Berger (Bonduel/Bonduel) led to her stealing home, giving the Pointers the 1-0 lead. UWSP tacked on another run in the third when Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) drove in Lauren Watkins (Baraboo/Baraboo), pushing the advantage to 2-0.

That's when the bats of UW-Whitewater came alive, as the Warhawks plated six runs on six hits and stranded two. After Whitewater tacked on another run in the fourth, the Pointers scored their third run of the game, when Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh/West)'s leadoff single led to a run, when she scored on a Katie Shulfer (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) single.

Two more runs by the Warhawks in their half of the sixth was too much for the Pointers to overcome, as the Whitewater took game one 9-3.

Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) took the loss for the Pointers, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, in two and two-thirds innings of work, walking three and striking out two.

Nelson collected two of the Pointers six hits, as the only UWSP player to have a multi-hit game.

In game two, the Pointers again jumped in front early taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning before Whitewater struck again. The Warhawks posted six runs on seven hits, including a two-run home run, to pull in front 6-2.

The Pointers plated one run in their half of the seventh before Whitewater ended the threat and the game, completing the sweep 6-3.

Chelsea Hensler (Waterloo/Waterloo) suffered the loss for the Pointers, her second of the season, striking out two and walking one. Nelson pitched the final two and a third innings in relief.

The Pointers (16-8, 2-2 WIAC) return to action on Saturday, April 17 when they continue their tour of the WIAC powerhouse teams, traveling to UW-Eau Claire for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
