Liegel Lifts Pointers to Sweep of Pioneers

Game 1 Box  |  Game 2 Box

STEVENS POINT – Kimberly Liegel broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out solo home run to lift the Pointer softball team to a game one victory over the Pioneers of UW-Platteville. The Pointers went on to take game two 10-1 in five innings to complete the series sweep.

This marks the first time the Pointers have opened the season with back-to-back conference victories since the 2007 season, when the team swept UW-Eau Claire in the conference opener.

The Pointers jumped in front 2-0 in the third inning of game one, but Platteville answered back in the top of the third inning, plating two runs and tying the score at 2-2.

The Pointers pushed back in front in the bottom of the fifth inning when Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh/West) drove in a run and Lauren Watkins stole home and (Baraboo/Baraboo)Brianna Tremillo# scored on the play, giving the Pointers the 5-2 lead.

Platteville added one more run in the sixth and capitalized on a Pointer error in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs and tying the game at 5-5.

With two runners gone in the bottom of the seventh and facing extra innings, Liegel connected on an Anderson pitch over the left-centerfield fence, giving the Pointers the win.

Katie Shulfer (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH), Sarah Butts (Greenfield/Greenfield) and Jessica Berger (Bonduel/Bonduel) each tallied two hits on the day for the Pointers and Watkins drove in two runs for Stevens Point.

Game two lacked the drama supplied in game one, as Watkins opened a five run first inning with a home run. Four more Pointer runs crossed the plate in the first inning and the team added five more in the third to jump in front 10-1.

That was all the run support Chelsea Hensler (Waterloo/Waterloo) would need, as allowed seven hits and struck out one, earning the five inning victory.

Wenig finished the day 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored while Berger and Megan Tracey each added two hits also.

The Pointers (15-5, 2-0 WIAC) return to action on Tuesday, April 13 when they host St. Norbert in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
