Pointers Rally Past Titans

Box Score

STEVENS POINT - Louis Hurd's (Portage) three-point dagger with 1:06 remaining gave the Pointers the lead for good, as UW-Stevens Point closed out the game on a 10-4 run to survive a 22-point effort from UW-Oshkosh's DJ Marsh on their way to a 73-67 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory Wednesday evening.

The Pointers led by as many as eight in the game's opening half, building a 21-13 advantage with 9:30 remaining in the opening stanza. UW-Oshkosh answered with a 13-4 run to tie the score at 26 with just over 1:24 remaining and the two teams entered the halftime locker room deadlocked at 28.

In the second half, the Pointers built an early four point lead, 35-31, before Oshkosh came fighting back, taking a four point lead of their own, 43-39, with just 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Stevens Point battled back, erasing the deficit with 10:51 remaining, but Oshkosh answered right back, regaining the lead. UW-Stevens Point stayed within striking distance down the stretch, never letting the Titans pull away by more than four down the stretch and with 1:06 left, Hurd dropped a three-pointer, his only three-pointer of the night, and clutch free-throw shooting the final minute by Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) and Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) earned the Pointers the six point victory.

Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay) led four Pointers in double figures, scoring a season and career-high 20 points in 30 minutes of action, all off the bench. Hurd chipped in 19 points while Moses and Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) each chipped in 16 points in the victory. Moses led the way with five rebounds.

For the Titans, DJ Marsh scored 22 and led the way with seven rebounds. Marsh also surpassed the 1,500 career point mark with his first basket of the game.

UW-Stevens Point (12-1, 3-1 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 9, when they host UW-La Crosse in action starting at 5 p.m.
