Pointers Survive Late Scare in Superior

Box Score

SUPERIOR – Entering Saturday's game with the possibility of moving up in the rankings, it was the Pointer defense, not the normally potent offense, that helped the Pointers improve to 15-1 overall, 6-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King)' (Milwaukee) steal and break-away dunk with 28 seconds remaining erased a one point Superior lead and an Evan Sweeney (Appleton) steal and free-throws gave the Pointers a three point edge as the Pointers pulled out the 56-53 victory over the Yellowjackts of UW-Superior.

The Pointers led for the entire first half, but could not push the lead to double digits, as Superior kept the Pointers within striking distance. UW-Stevens Point held a 33-27 advantage at the halftime break.

The Pointers stayed in control for much of the second half until, 2ith 1:11 left, Dwight Hill's free-throws erased the Pointer lead and took a one point lead, 53-52. After a missed three-point basket by the Pointers, with the Yellowjackets looking to add to their lead, Jenkins' steal and break-away dunk regained the lead for UWSP and with just :15 remaining, Sweeny's steal and subsequent free-throws sealed the victory for the Pointers.

Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) finished as the Pointers leading scorer, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting. He was also the team's leading rebounder, collecting nine boards. Jenkins and Nick Krull (Marshall) each added 10 in the victory.

Dwight Hill led Superior with 14 points, seven of which came at the free-throw line.

The Pointers continue their road trip Wednesday, Jan. 20 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire, who handed UW-Whitewater their first conference loss of the season on Saturday. The Blugolds led from beginning to end to hand the Warhawks an 80-67 loss.

Game time at Zorn Arena on Wednesday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
