MINNEAPOLIS - The UW-Stevens Point softball team opened the 2009 season with a split against Augsburg College in the opening round of the Auggie Dome Tournament at Edor Nelson Field.
In game one, the faced a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh before
Mallory Martens (Green Bay, Preble) doubled down the left field line, bringing home
Allie Dorn (Greenville, Fox Valley Lutheran) for the game-tying score. Next up,
Jessica Berger (Bonduel) singled up the middle to drive in the game-winning run as the Pointers took home the win.
Dorn went 2-2 in game one and scored on Martins game-tying double. In the circle,
Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) went the distance, scattering two hits and striking out four in the win.
In game two, the Pointers held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth, but the Auggies scored one run in the fourth and fifth and added four in the sixth to jump in front 7-2 heading into the final frame. The Pointers mounted a comeback, plating four runs in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough, as the Auggies shut the door, handing UWSP the loss.
Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL, Batavia) and
Brittany Zelenka (Marathon) finished the day with two RBI each and
Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh, West) had two hits. Kastenmeyer took the loss, throwing four and two thirds innings and striking out seven.
The Pointers return to action on Saturday morning with a double-header against Concordia-Moorhead, beginning at 9 a.m.
