Pointers Shoot Past Pirates

TACOMA, Wash. – The Pointers knocked down 22 of their 28 shots in the first half, posting a 78.6 percent field goal percentage in the opening half as the tenth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team defeated 16th ranked Whitworth 101-79 in the opening round of the 2009 Puget Sound Tip-Off Classic.

The Pointers connected on their first nine field goals of the game's opening half and hit 13 of their first 14 shots, building a 17 point advantage midway through the opening half, 32-15. Stevens Point continued to pull away in the first half, building a 24 point edge, 55-31, at halftime.

The Pointers dominated the Pirates down low, scoring 24 of their 55 first half points in the paint.
In the second half, the Pointers shooting cooled, as the team shot 58.1 percent from the floor, but the Pointers managed to build a 37 point lead down the stretch and close out the in-region victory over the Pirates by 22, 101-79.

Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) scored a game-high 31 points on 11-13 shooting, including 5-6 from three-point land and was a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. Louis Hurd (Portage) chipped in 16 points and six rebounds while Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna) added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Nick Krull (Marshall) shot a perfect 4-4 from the floor and 3-3 from the free-throw line on the evening to finish as the third Pointer in double figures, posting 11 points.

Jack Loofburrow led the way for the Pirates, scoring 18 points on 7-12 shooting.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action tomorrow evening when they play host Puget Sound in the final game of their west coast road trip. Game time is scheduled for 10 p.m. central. The game can be heard on B104.9 locally or at www.b1049.com on the world wide web.
