STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The rain couldn't dampen the energy of the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (3-1-3) as the Pointers routed Buena Vista (0-3-1) by a 7-0 final on Friday afternoon. The seven goals in the most in a match by UWSP since a 9-0 home-opener win over Lawrence on Sept. 1, 2018.
Christa Borchardt (New Berlin, Wis./West) netted her first goal of the match in the 12th minute.
Liliana Martinez (Portland, Ore./Rex Putnam) had the assist as her free kick set up Borchardt for the goal.
Rita Danner (West Des Moines, Iowa/Waukee) made it 2-0 in the 18th minute with
Piper Hanley (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) and
Piper Gunderson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) getting an assist on the play.
Just over a minute later, Borchardt scored her second of the game. Gunderson and Danner had helpers on the play.
Gunderson scored her first collegiate goal in the 19th minute to make it 4-0. Borchardt had an assist on the goal.
In the 47th minute, Hanley found the back of the net with
Grace Peters (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) getting an assist on the goal.
Borchardt completed the hat trick in the 51st minute, the second hat trick of her career. Gunderson picked up her fifth point of the match with an assist.
Sophia Ryan (Orland Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) also had an assist.
Danner closed out the scoring in the 56th minute with her second of the match.
Katrina Engel (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Hanley has assists.
Jocelyn Blahnik (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) kept her season-opening scoreless streak in tact with a first-half clean sheet. She was untested and extended her streak to 360 minutes.
Erika Panella (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine) played 27:15 in net and did not need to make a save.
Nellie Hill (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) made her collegiate debut and made the only save needed in the shutout win.
The Pointers travel to Wartburg on Saturday (Sept. 19) for a 3:00 p.m. start in Iowa.
