ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (5-5) split a pair of matches at the Bethel Tri on Friday. UWSP swept Carroll (7-4) before suffered a sweep at the hands of host Bethel (8-3).
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had eight kills in each match to tie for the team lead in both.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) had a match-best 18 assists against Carroll.
Maggie O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) led UWSP with 16 assists versus Bethel.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was in double figures with 13 and 10 digs.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) had a team-high 12 digs versus Bethel.
UWSP 3, Carroll 0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-18)
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) and
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) each had a kill in a 7-0 run as UWSP took an 11-5 lead in the first.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had four kills late as the Pointers held off a late charge by Carroll.
Isabelle Axelson (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) had a kill as the Pointers used a 4-0 run to go up, 8-4. Grabarski and Thomka had two kills apiece for a 16-13 advantage. Shaw had a block and a kill as another 4-0 burst put UWSP up, 21-19. Thomka had a solo block for the third set point and Moe served an ace to seal the second.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) had a pair of kills early to put the Pointers in front, 7-4, in the third. Nevins and Thomka each had an ace as the lead grew to 17-10. Nevin and Strege had an ace apiece late to finish the sweep.
UWSP 0, Bethel 3 (20-25, 17-25, 20-25)
Shaw posted four kills early in the first as the Pointers had an 8-6 lead. Thomka had a block and a kill in a 5-0 run as UWSP went up, 13-7.
Delilah Hyland (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) had a kill on each end of an 8-0 run by Bethel as UWSP dropped the opening set.
Trieloff and Hyland combined on a block, had a kill each and O'Brien served an ace for a 10-5 UWSP advantage in the second.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) served an ace as the Pointers held a 13-9 lead. Cregan had a block and a kill late, but Bethel used a 16-4 run to take the second set.
Hyland and Shaw combined for five kills as UWSP got ahead, 12-10, in the third. Thomka had a kill for a 19-19 tie. The Royals scored seven of the final eight points to finish the sweep.
The Pointers return home on Tuesday (Sept. 22) for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Edgewood.
