STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (4-4) fell in five sets to visiting Concordia (Wis.) (5-3) in UWSP's home opener on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) posted a season-high 30 assists and surpassed the 1,000 career assists plateau in the match.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township),
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego),
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) and
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) all posted double-digit kills for the Pointers.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a team-best 22 digs.
Thomka had a kill and an ace early in the first set. Shaw recorded her second kill, but CUW had built an 18-10 lead. Thomka had a kill and a block late as the Falcons took the opening set, 25-15.
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) had three kills in the second set as UWSP went ahead, 13-7. Shaw and Grabarski combined for five kills as UWSP led, 20-17.
Delilah Hyland (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) posted a pair of kills as UWSP used a 5-1 run to even the match with a 25-21 set two win.
Shaw and Thomka had a combined five kills as the Pointers began the third in front, 12-3. Grabarski had back-to-back kills as UWSP led, 17-10. Trieloff had a pair of kills late and
Maggie O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) sealed the 25-21 win with an ace.
Thomka and Shaw combined for six kills as the Pointers trailed in the fourth, 14-11. Thomka and Trieloff each had a kill late as CUW took the fourth, 25-19.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) capped a 5-0 run with an ace as UWSP led, 5-3, in the fifth.
Isabelle Axelson (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) and
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) each had a kill late as CUW ended on a 7-3 run to take the fifth, 15-10.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota on Friday (Sept. 18) for the Bethel Tri. UWSP will face Carroll at 4:00 p.m. before taking on host, Bethel, at 6:30 p.m.
